Partner Spotlight: Cigna and the Power of Self-Love
When caring adults show up, confidence grows. Thank you to Cigna for helping our SMART Girls learn the power of self-love and self-expression. #ClubKids #GreatFutures

At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford, teaching our girls to love themselves isn’t just a lesson — it’s a lifelong skill. This month, our JDL Northwest SMART Girls experienced that firsthand thanks to our friends at Cigna, who joined the Club for a special Social Emotional Learning (SEL) workshop centered on self-expression, confidence, and care.
The day began with laughter and lighthearted “show-and-tells” as the girls shared stories about their favorite outfits and what makes them feel most confident. What started as funny, candid moments soon evolved into meaningful conversations about self-image, identity, and the importance of taking time to de-stress from school and life through journaling and mindfulness.
Through guided discussions and reflection activities, the girls built trust, learned to name their emotions, and discovered how positive self-talk can shape the way they see themselves and others. The session reminded everyone in the room — girls and mentors alike — that confidence grows strongest in spaces where care and connection come first.
Meanwhile, our SMART Girls at the Southwest Club took self-care to the next level by creating beautiful mood boards filled with affirmations, uplifting words, and images that represent their dreams and personal power. Led by Club staff, the project encouraged girls to visualize the kind of women they want to become — confident, kind, and unstoppable.
It was so powerful to see the girls open up and express themselves freely. Each walked away not only with a creative project in hand, but also with a renewed sense of confidence and pride.
The event was made possible through the support of Cigna volunteers, whose presence modeled what it means to be caring, consistent adults in young people’s lives.
“When corporate partners like Cigna step into our Clubs, they’re not just volunteering — they’re helping open doors to Great Futures,” said Misty Amerena, Director of Corporate Engagement at BGCH. “Our girls gain role models who listen, encourage, and remind them that their voices matter.”
Moments like these show why social-emotional learning is essential in shaping strong, confident young women. Through programs like SMART Girls — and partners who share our commitment — the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford continue to create safe, empowering spaces where every girl learns that the most important relationship she’ll ever build is the one with herself.
