Youth of the Year: Celebrating Leadership, Resilience, and the Power of Belonging

Each year, Youth of the Year stands as the most prestigious honor a Club member can achieve within the Boys & Girls Club movement. More than a competition, it is a celebration of character, service, academic success, and leadership. Furthermore, it is a powerful reminder of what is possible when young people are surrounded by opportunity and belief.

At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford, this year’s Youth of the Year event brought together Club leaders, community partners, former Youth of the Year alumni, families, and staff to witness something extraordinary: young people courageously sharing their stories.

Sharing Their Stories with Courage

Finalists stepped before a distinguished panel of community leaders and advocates to present speeches and respond to interview questions. They spoke candidly about adversity, growth, mentorship, and the role the Club played in helping them discover their voice and potential.

They shared stories of overcoming personal challenges, navigating school and family responsibilities, and finding a safe space where they felt seen and supported. Their words reflected maturity beyond their years and a deep understanding of the values that come with the Youth of the Year title.

As one panelist reflected afterward:

“What makes Youth of the Year so powerful is not just what these young people have achieved, but who they have become.”

The room was filled with pride and hope.

A Legacy of Leadership

We were especially honored to welcome former Youth of the Year alumni who returned to support and encourage this year’s candidates. Their presence reinforced that Youth of the Year is not just a title for one night; it is the beginning of a lifelong connection to leadership, advocacy, and impact.

The program represents the very best of what happens inside our Clubs every day. It reflects the mentors who guide, the staff who believe, the families who support, and the community that invests in young people.

Celebrating This Year’s Honorees

We are proud to recognize our 2026 winners:

Youth of the Year:

Tiarra R. (Southwest Club) - Tiarra exemplifies poise, purpose, and the heart of a leader. Her voice, vision, and commitment to lifting others up embody what Youth of the Year represents.

“The Boys and Girls club has been a staple in my life. They are a safe haven, not only to me but for so many children around me. Now, this is my opportunity to put my foot forward, and to help advocate for children” - Tiarra R.

Jr. Youth of the Year:

Axel N. Jr. (South End Club) - Axel demonstrates confidence, growth, and emerging leadership, a powerful reminder that leadership development begins early when young people are nurtured in a supportive environment.

“I've been here for four years, and it has shown me how to be a leader, how to treat others, and much more that I'm very grateful for. I can't even explain how happy I am for being part of the South End Boys and Girls Club.” - Axel N. Jr.

Emani, the 2025 Connecticut Youth of the Year winner, was in attendance and witnessed the night unfold.

“I truly think that this entire experience has been something that has changed my life for the better and has helped me in figuring out what I want to do in the future, which is give back to my community the same way it has given to me. I'm grateful for this opportunity and for being able to pass the torch to one of my good friends and fellow club members” - Emani L.

Together, they represent the strength and promise of Hartford’s next generation. Congratulations to all of our candidates and our winners. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the panelists, mentors, families, and community who continue to support our youth and our mission.

Black History Month is a time to honor the achievements, leadership, and enduring impact of Black Americans while reflecting on the work that continues to move our communities forward. It is a celebration of culture, resilience, innovation, and excellence that has shaped our nation in profound ways. At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford, this recognition is deeply connected to our mission. Many of the youth and families we serve see their own stories reflected in the legacy of Black leaders and change makers. Creating spaces where young people feel seen, valued, and empowered is central to who we are.
