In 1860 Mary and Alice Goodwin, Elizabeth Hamersley and Louisa Bushnell established The Dashaway Club at the Morgan Street School in Hartford to provide structured out-of-school activities for disadvantaged immigrant boys. These first SMART GIRLS had a vision that grew into Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford and ultimately the first of 5,000 Boys & Girls Clubs across the country.
